– The legal fund for the defense of Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Alexei Pertsev has received more than $350,000 and public support from former NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Roman Storm and Roman Semyonov of Tornado Cash are accused of money laundering and sanctions violations in the United States.
Storm, who holds dual US and Russian citizenship, was arrested by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and placed under house arrest in Washington state. He is due to stand trial in 2024 after being charged in August 2023 with money laundering and sanctions violations. He has not pleaded guilty. Another developer and co-founder, Roman Semenov, was also charged but has not been arrested.
The DOJ alleges that more than $1 billion of cryptocurrency was moved through a mixing service that attempted to spoof wallet addresses and ensure the anonymity of senders and recipients. Pertsev has been in prison in the Netherlands since 2023.
Snowden retweeted the post, asking people to help, adding that “privacy is not a crime”.
