– El Faro recently released a series of videos that confirm and expand on evidence of Bukele’s negotiations with Salvadoran gangs, which he has denied for years.

The U.S. Treasury Department confirmed allegations of Bukele’s team’s negotiations with gangs by imposing sanctions on officials, claiming that the administration offered financial incentives to MS-13 and 18th Street Gang (Barrio 18) to keep gang attacks and confirmed homicides low.

El Faro CEO Oscar Martinez said: We believe that the possible crimes for which warrants are issued are a pretext for reprisals for criticism and illegal connections. Any detentions or searches of our newsrooms will be seen as reprisals for journalism.

The Bukele administration has been prone to detaining those who criticize his regime before, often without respecting constitutional norms.

Mario Gomez, a technologist and critic of Bukele’s bitcoin initiative, was detained and charged with fraud, although no arrest warrant was issued.

Bukele has recently been working closely with the Trump administration, making its human rights abusive prisons available for use by the Trump administration to detain people, many of whom have been deported and held outside the U.S. in clear violation of court orders.
