📌 A woman lost $20,000 in savings at Wells Fargo when she accepted a request from scammers posing as employees of the bank’s fraud department: Message
– Scammers posing as employees of Wells Fargo’s fraud department allegedly stole the woman’s money from her bank account.
Roberta Thompson, a school bus driver from Katy, Texas, says the trouble started after she received a text message from someone she believed was a Wells Fargo fraud officer, Fox26 Houston reports.
The message warned of a possible fraudulent scheme. Then, she said, she received a call from a man who identified himself as a bank fraud officer.
Thompson said that to protect the $20,000 in her account, she needed to withdraw it and then deposit it into a new account he claimed was open for her. But that account belonged to the caller, who scammed her out of her savings. Thompson shared:
this is all I had. It was my savings. It was to pay all the bills and what I needed. I just wanted to faint. It was really hard.
She claims Wells Fargo refused to refund the stolen funds, despite providing a recording of the conversation with the fraudster and other evidence showing she was a victim of fraud.
Wells Fargo officials have yet to comment in response to a reporter’s request for comment.
