A new Ethereum initiative introduces a trust service layer on top of the blockchain for artificial intelligence systems.

This approach offers mechanisms for identity, reputation and skill validation in decentralized environments.

This will support the wider adoption of Ethereum in the context of decentralized, intermediary-free systems.

Within a single organization, whether AI agents function smoothly because their access rights, verification, and behavioral protocols are already approved. In an open environment, this structure breaks down. An AI agent lacks a trusted method to authenticate the interlocutor’s identity, competencies, or potential risks. This lack of trust leaves AI agents isolated, which hinders the creation of a global open market for the autonomous exchange of their services.

ERC-8004 aims to solve this dilemma by adding a lightweight layer of trust to Ethereum. Instead of introducing cumbersome logic, the proposal is based on three simple registers on the blockchain that work together to establish mutual trust between agents.

Identity register assigns AI agents verifiable network credentials akin to digital passports. A reputation registry records past actions and outcomes of interactions, allowing agents to determine trustworthiness over time. An attestation registry enables third parties or systems to certify agents for specific abilities or scenarios, acting as an evidentiary basis for their qualifications in the network. Together, these registries enable agents to find partners, evaluate them and collaborate without prior arrangements or centralized intermediaries.

By standardizing the way trust is expressed on the blockchain, ERC-8004 enables AI machines to build complex workflows, share services, and coordinate tasks across platforms and organizations. This method allows much of the computing to be done off-chain while tying trust to Ethereum’s security, making it practical without sacrificing decentralization.

Separately, Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a larger goal for the ecosystem, stating that 2026 should be the year Ethereum begins to regain lost ground in the area of self-sovereignty and trust. He stressed the need to improve privacy on the network, make it easier to run full nodes, facilitate decentralized applications, and give users more control over their personal data.
