Situational Awareness is investing $500 million in Source Foundry, a startup that is developing new equipment to eliminate bottlenecks in the production of advanced semiconductors.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the hedge fund added another $400 million this week, on top of its previous investments.

A representative for Situational Awareness did not respond to a request for comment.

Source Foundry was founded last year by Stanford researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burg and recently closed a funding round with a $5 billion valuation.

The company focuses on extreme ultraviolet lithography equipmenta market currently dominated by the Dutch firm ASMLaiming to accelerate and reduce the cost of producing AI accelerators amid growing demand.

Sequoia partner Stephanie Zhang notes: If you move up the AI supply chainfrom models to chips to the equipment used to manufacture themeach level becomes increasingly critical and constrained. Source Foundry is tackling the most significant bottleneck: semiconductor manufacturing equipment, starting with lithography.

Situational Awareness, led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, shifted its strategy after heavy losses on public AI company stocks led to the sale of stakes, primarily to Citadel.

Other U.S. startups are also working on innovations in lithography to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and expand capacity for producing next-generation chips.
