📌 Supporters of BIP-110 on the Bitcoin network have moved to a sidechain, while the main network continues to evolve | The Block

A small group of Bitcoin nodes supporting BIP-110 split from the main network at block 961,632, creating a fork backed by only a small fraction of the main networks computing power.

While the main Bitcoin chain continued to steadily add blocks, the BIP-110 fork managed to mine only two blocks and, by 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time, was already seven blocks behind.

BIP-110 is a one-year measure limiting the use of non-financial data, such as Ordinals, on the Bitcoin network. This proposal sparked a discussion about the proper use of block space.

Over the past two weeks, only 2.53% of blocks showed support for BIP-110, which is significantly below the 55% threshold required to approve the initiative without a fork.

On Saturday, the Bitcoin blockchain split into two branchesnodes running BIP-110 rejected blocks that did not signal support for the controversial anti-spam proposal. However, only a small minority of miners support the forked chain.

BIP-110 is a one-year rule that prohibits non-financial entries, such as Ordinals, from being added to the blockchain. The proposal turned a technical dispute into a battle over who gets to decide how to use the networks limited space.

The split began with block No. 961,632, which triggered a two-week period during which BIP-110 nodes began requiring a support signal from every new block. The leading mining pool, AntPool, mined the first block without the signal. Although the mainnet accepted this block, BIP-110 nodes rejected it and instead accepted an alternative block from Roughnecks via Ocean.

By 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the main chain had reached block 961,640, while the BIP-110 chain was stuck at block 961,633, having generated only a second block, and was seven blocks behind.

At block height 961,632, competing blocks based on block 961,631 appeared, but with different transactions. The first was mined by AntPool, and the next by the network. The Mempool monitor attributed the alternative block to Roughnecks, operating via Ocean.

The main chains early lead indicates that BIP-110 supporters split off without securing enough mining power to support their fork at the usual rate.

At the time of publication, Bitcoin was trading at around $65,000, and no significant price changes have been recorded since the split, according to data from The Blocks price page.

Bitcoin updates are typically adopted after a majority of miners signal their readiness to follow the new rules. BIP-110 set a threshold of 55% , or 1,109 out of 2,016 blocks over a two-week cycle.

However, support never came close to this level. According to the BIP-110 monitor, only 51 blocks2.53% of 2,016expressed support during the final period leading up to Saturdays fork.

At the time of publication, none of the first nine blocks on the main chain following the fork showed support for BIP-110. After the BIP-110 nodes rejected the block at block height 961,632, they lost the ability to follow the blocks built on top of it. Their separate chain now requires its own miners to create signal blocks and continue the fork.

BIP-110s transaction data limits will take effect only once the BIP-110 chain reaches block 963,648. The new rules will take effect starting with block 965,664 and will apply for 52,416 blocksapproximately one yearas specified in the specification.

The BIP-110 rules restrict several ways of including non-financial data in Bitcoin transactions. Specifically, these include limiting the size of certain fields to 256 bytes, an 83-byte limit on OP_RETURN outputs, and restrictions on certain Taproot functions.
