– Google Maps has renamed the smallest of the Great Lakes to Lake America for all users in the United States after President Trump signed an executive order to that effect.

This change comes amid escalating trade disputes with Canada, in which Washington imposed new tariffs on Canadian exports totaling approximately $28 billion.

Users in the U.S. now see the name Lake America, while residents of Canada continue to see Lake Ontario, and for everyone else, both names are displayed simultaneously.

Alphabet informed Fortune magazine that this move is related to an update in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System and is in line with the companys standard practice regarding disputed names of bodies of water.

Apple Maps has retained the original name for U.S. users, while MapQuest has refused to adopt the new designation.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the renaming, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized that no one would call it Lake America, since it has been known as Lake Ontario for centuries.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also rejected this change for her region.

This move is similar to an earlier update by Google, when the Gulf of Mexico was given a new official name last year.
