– Bhutan is migrating its government digital identity system from Polygon to Ethereum. Jigme Tenzing, secretary of the GovTech agency, said the government will further strengthen the digital identity system by moving to the Ethereum network. Bhutan is moving from Polygon to Ethereum with its National Digital Identity (NDI) system as it continues to develop blockchain innovation in the country.

Bhutan’s state broadcaster said on Monday that the current Polygon-based NDI platform is already integrated with the Ethereum blockchain, with the final transition scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. Jigme Tenzing, secretary of GovTech, explained that the country has been using Polygon for NDI, and by moving to Ethereum, we will further enhance the security of our digital identity, the statement said.

Bhutan’s NDI uses sovereign identity technology to enable approximately 800,000 citizens to store and share digital data for online services. The project is set to launch on Polygon in August 2024.

Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi wrote in X that Bhutan was the first country

to anchor its national digital identity system on Ethereum.

Miyaguchi and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin attended the launch ceremony in Bhutan on Monday.

When I first traveled to Bhutan in May 2024, I felt a deep overlap between Bhutan and Ethereum: both believe that the future should be based on strong fundamental values, Miyaguchi said. This milestone marks not only a national breakthrough, but also a global step toward a more open and secure digital future in the long term.
