Anthropic is in preliminary talks with Meta about leasing computing power for AIthe potential value of the two-year deal could reach $10 billion.

Anthropic continues to face a shortage of Nvidia chips needed to meet demand for Claude, while Meta seeks to prove that its massive investments in AI can be profitable.

The talks are in the early stages, and a final agreement has not yet been signed.

As reported by The New York Times on Friday, Anthropic has asked Meta to lease AI computing resources under a two-year contract that could be worth up to $10 billion; this indicates that the developer of Claude is still unable to obtain enough chips to meet its computing power needs.

According to the Times, citing informed sources, Anthropic sent Meta a proposal in June, and Meta is still reviewing it.

The negotiations are still considered preliminary, and either party may withdraw from the agreement before the end of the two-year term. If the deal is finalized, Anthropic is expected to make monthly payments to Meta.

This deal would follow a contract Anthropic signed in May with Elon Musks SpaceX, under which Anthropic is obligated to pay $45 billion over three years approximately $1.25 billion per month for access to Nvidia GPUs at the Colossus 1 data center.

Anthropic is valued at nearly $1 trillion, but the company still cannot scale its computing power fast enough to support the Claude model. Nvidia GPUs remain a bottleneck for AI developers, and Anthropic has been forced to impose limits on how intensively users can utilize its most advanced models.

The current situation has forced Anthropic to seek out computing resources wherever possible, even if only temporarily and for a fee.

The struggle for computing resources to keep artificial intelligence platforms running isnt limited to Anthropic alone. Google also pays SpaceX about $920 million a month for graphics processing units and has begun restricting access to its Gemini model, a move that has even affected Meta.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in May that the company is considering entering the cloud computing market, noting that this is a way to show investors that AI spending can generate revenue not only by improving Metas own products.

Last October, he also noted that other companies regularly inquire about the possibility of purchasing computing resources from Meta at a premium.

Metas capital expenditures in 2026 could reach $145 billion, with most of that amount going toward AI infrastructure. This figure is more than double the $72 billion spent the previous year.

In May, the company also cut 8,000 jobs, redirecting funds toward AI investments. The sale of Anthropics excess capacity would give CEO Mark Zuckerberg a concrete answer to shareholders questions about where those funds were spent.

Its also worth noting that Meta is developing its own Llama models and competes directly with Claude, so the deal would make the tech giant both a competitor and a landlord for Anthropic.
