The largest Bitcoin ETFs by assets under management (AUM) in 2026: a comparison of their structure, fee structure, and significance within their segment.

IBIT became the largest spot Bitcoin ETF within a few months of its approval in January 2024, as evidenced by data on the BlackRock iShares IBIT product page. Thanks to BlackRocks connections with advisory platforms and its institutional distribution infrastructure, this fund was launched faster than any competitor.

By mid-2026, IBITs assets under management (AUM) exceeded $70 billion, placing it among the top 20 largest ETFs across all asset classes in the U.S. IBIT began to be used as collateral on several platforms, shifting its role from a passive Bitcoin investment to that of a settlement infrastructure. Data from Farside Investors on fund flows shows that net inflows into IBIT have repeatedly exceeded the combined inflows of all other spot Bitcoin ETFs put together.

Coinbase Custody holds Bitcoin for IBIT, GBTC, ARKB, BITB, BTCW, BTCO, EZBC, and BRRR (eight out of ten spot ETFs). The concentration of counterparties at Coinbase Custody poses a common risk for most Bitcoin ETFs. At the fund level, the associated risks relate to the quality of net asset value (NAV) tracking and the continuity of operations.

It is this access structurerather than the very idea of investing in Bitcointhat has led advisors to adopt these instruments. Once Bitcoin is included in an ETF, the discussion shifts from speculation to portfolio construction.

For retail investors choosing between the two market leaders, the key factor in their decision is BlackRocks depth of liquidity compared to Fidelitys independent custody.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted over $1 billion in net inflows since their launch through mid-2026, with IBIT accounting for the largest share, according to ValueAddVCs tracking of institutional adoption.

FBTC is the only major Bitcoin ETF whose issuer also controls custody through Fidelity Digital Assets, making it the only fund with full vertical integration from issuer to custodian. This vertical integration eliminates dependence on third-party cryptocurrency custodians, which is a structural difference from all its counterparts, whose custody is handled by Coinbase.

Fidelity’s retail client base and network of registered investment advisors provide an alternative distribution channel that differs from BlackRock’s strategy, which is primarily focused on institutional investors.

According to TipRanks, FBTCs assets under management stood at approximately $25 billion as of mid-July 2026. Existing clients of Fidelitys brokerage division can purchase FBTC without opening an additional accountit appears in the same interface as any equity ETF.

A compromise on custody: Fidelity Digital Assets reduces third-party risk but concentrates operational risk within the same corporate group as the issuer. FBTC continued to attract inflows even during Bitcoins price decline in the second quarter of 2026, indicating that institutional investors view it as a strategic rather than a tactical position.

It is precisely this distinction, related to self-custody, that determines how retail investors view this choice. The Bitcoin community consistently points to Fidelitys self-custody as a decisive factor compared to cheaper alternatives: Fidelity is a veteran of the Bitcoin community that holds its own bitcoins.

For existing Fidelity clients, the practical appeal is more obvious: FBTC appears in the same brokerage interface as their stock and bond ETFs.

From an asset allocation perspective for traditional finance advisors, FBTCs market role represents IBITs strongest competitor, given Fidelitys existing client relationships and brand perception among retail investors.

In January 2024, GBTC converted from a closed-end trust to a spot ETF; current information about the fund is available on the Grayscale GBTC product page. The 1.50% management fee is by far the highest in this category, a result of maintaining the fee structure that was in place prior to approval.
